Feminist Film Theory- Ready Player One

Ready Player One both fits and doesn't fit feminist film theory as the lead character is male and the cast is fairly male dominated. That being said, the main female character, portrayed by Olivia Cooke, fits a number of feminist theories. For example, she isn't portrayed as an overly attractive character and she isn't sexualised. This fits with Laura Mulvey's ideas on how women should be portrayed as she does not fit the idea of the male gaze. She is also vital to the outcome of the film and is portrayed as strong when she sacrifices herself for the lead character.
