Marxism in The Lobster

The Lobster (2015) is dystopian film, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, where single people are given 45 days to find a partner or risk being turned into an animal of their choice. The film follows a number of Marxist values but I feel as if the society within it is actually more akin to modern communism than Marxism. In the film everyone has to wear the same clothes and a character's personality must match that of another character if they are to have a relationship. Everyone in the society also has an equal chance to find love, albeit with certain conditions. These rules would suggest that their world is Marxist, however there are some aspects of the society that make it more communist than Marxist. For example, despite having a system that is based on equality, there is still a class difference where couples take the role of the bourgeoise and single people take the role of the proletariat. There is also a rebellion against the regime which is something that is seen quite often in communist states.
