Podcast Episode: Can the Grammys be fixed?

Overview of content, genre, target audience, history and broadcast information

In this podcast, a group of music journalists and experts from the New York Times discuss the latest pop music trends. In this particular episode, the presenters talk about the 2018 grammy Awards. The key issue they discuss is whether the awards are fixed or if the judges are biased to particular genres or styles. They also discuss the lack of diversity over recent years compared to this year. I believe that this podcast is aimed and older teenagers and young adults as it is based on pop culture and current music trends. The podcast is unscripted which allows better flow as well as for the presenters to go off on interesting tangents. However, I feel that 50 minutes for this podcast is too long as I lost concentration after about 20 minutes. The podcast is produced by the New York Times and broadcast on Spotify.

Analysis of sounds used (eg: vocal set-ups, effects, music, location/field recording, foley etc.)

From what I could tell, there were four people in this podcast, each with their own microphone. I also believe that it may have been recorded in a studio as there was no background noise and the presenters’ voices were crisp and clean. The only other sounds in this podcast were recordings of songs performed at the Grammy Awards. The music was played initially uninterrupted before being turned down to background music so that the hosts could discuss it.

For the research, I worked in a group with two others and this is the result of research for two more podcasts.

We also believe that there are a number of things that make a podcast good. The main points being that they should be approximatley 15 minutes long and they benefit from no background noise and the use of sound efects.
