Music Video Research

Initially we started off working with a new band named FU92. As the band is new we could not research their previous work however, we were able to research the genre. FU92 describe themselves as an alternative punk rock band who are influenced by Royal Blood and Blink 182.

This feedback allowed us to then research those bands and get an idea of the format of music videos in this genre. Music videos in this genre seem to be a mix of narrative and mainly performance. We also discovered that videos of this genre tend to be quite fast paced and energetic.

After the initial research into the genre we then held a discussion with the band in order to find out a bit more about how they see their style and to come up with a few ideas. The band said that they would prefer a performance based narrative that reflected the journey that they had come through. They also said they wanted bright colours which breaks the general codes and conventions of the genre. From this information we started to develop a plan for the video.

Contingency Plan

After abot a month of working with the band we started to see some reliability issues in terms of missing meetings. This led us to develop a contingency plan in case everything went wrong. We initially chose Star Girl by McFly as the backup but soon found an already existing music video. We then chose to work on She Wants to Be Me by Busted as our second choice. We initially looked at the codes and conventions of the genre and analysed the lyrics so that we had the first steps of a plan if we needed it.

FU92 Dropped

At the start of 2018 we were forced to stop working with FU92 as they hadn't yet finished the lyrics for the song and we were running out of time to finish the project. Luckily we had started a contingency plan so had something to fall back on. After the initial research outlined in our contingency plan we decided to set up a survey to understand what Busted fans expect from a music video. We took this information and the lyric analysis we had done and came up with some ideas for the video. We realised that Busted videos tend to be a mix of performnce and narrative and we felt that we needed to do the same as that is what the target audience would expect. The survey also told us that fans didn't want a video that was too high production or too serious. From our lyric analysis we came up with the idea of recreating the story of the song in a humorous way. We decided that the video would be more effective if we had just one actor (Kian Baker) playing all of the roles. This presented us with a few challenges especially in scenes where two characters were supposed to be in the same shot. To get around this we filmed the same scene twice, one for each character, and layered them in editing and used a Luma Key. We also tried to keep most of the locations within college in order to prevent the video from seeming too high production.

Busted Music Video Analysis

After watching a few of Busted's music videos, we have found a common theme in their work. Their music videos tended to come across as fairly low budget and quite fun and fast paced which reflected their music. We also found that they had a slight humorous element to them as well as incorporating a narrative alongside their performance. For example, in the video for 'Crashed The Wedding' each band member played multiple characters in the narrative that were both male and female as well as showing their performance. This is something that we want to incorporate into our video as it will work well with the song.
