Rule of Thirds

In film and photography, when framing a shot you should always adhere to the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds states that the points at which a human eye is most attracted to, is the intersection of the lines created when dividing a frame into thirds both horizontally and vertically.

In the first photo, the subjects' eyes both line up with the uppermost intersections. In the second photo the subject's face is lined up with the upper right intersection. In the final photo the line between trees and land lies upon the lower horizontal line and the tree-sky border lies upon the upper horizontal line. The main focus of the image, the large tree lies on the left intersections. These three photos are how almost all shots should be framed before filming commences.
